We were designing pictures for trash cans today. Most of the pictures were about throwing trash away and keeping our planet clean. Trenton wrote about some fruit ninjas telling us to throw away the scraps when done.
Today is a warm day with a cool breeze. Today my friends, Chelsea, Hunter, Mia and myself are raking leaves. We are taking the leaves and putting them into trash bags. Cody found a beetle, it had black and orange stripes. The second graders don't throw their trash away and we are finding it all over the court yard. Today we began mulching with Shawn, Cody and Mrs. Pagnoni. I'm wondering what we will do next time.

Today is our first day of Steam, this is part of our steam program. We are cleaning out the court yard, adding mulch and raking leaves. Chelsea and Riely were weeding. Trentin, Hunter, Norah, Allison and Joshua were all deadheading. Deadheading is pulling out all the dead flower heads.
We know the kids are the ones who post to the blog, but since the summer program is over and we wanted to get the most recent pictures on the site, I am writing a quick blog.
We held a celebration cookout on Thursday, August 4. Everyone used the picnic benches and tables that we built. We invited our community partners from Lowes and Five Star Gardens, Tyler Mucha, and Mr. & Mrs. Provencher. Mr. Kustigian and members of the school committee were asked to come and see our hard work. We were also joined by many family members who were anxious to see the transformation that occurred in the courtyard.
Here is a link to an iMovie that the students made with the many pictures from the summer service learning program. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iLUJyKIHNhQ
On Friday, we went to Magic Wings Butterfly Conservatory in Deerfield. We saw many of the plants from our courtyard along with many of the same butterflies. We wrapped up our day with a quick stop at Yankee Candle and enjoyed a snow flurry in the Barvarian Village.
Addison, Ronin, Alyssa, Bryann, and I picked up the leaves outside and put them into trash cans. While we were doing this, Trenton, Cody, Arwin, McKenna, Aubrey, and Brennan were cleaning up the termite traps. We also cut down weeds and cut up some of the bushes to open up more space in the courtyard. Aubrey found some milk weeds while cutting the weeds away.
Mr. P and Mrs. P helped us build the bench around the tree. We helped screw the seats on to the bench to finish it. Finishing this bench today was our goal, which we met right on schedule. We would like to thank Mr. and Mrs. P for all their hard work and helping up make this bench possible. It helps make the courtyard look awesome. We are excited to show our families, friends, and community partners all the hard work we have put into our courtyard. Thank you to everyone who has support throughout the project. We look forward to using the courtyard during the school year.

They stopped the landscaping fabric every time they ran into a plant. Group two was doing a great job so was group one. Getting the landscaping fabric on the dirt and around the plants was a hard job but they were doing it Mrs. Jess found a piece of glass in the dirt to and Addison found a sea shell. Aubrey was cutting the day lilies and another plant. Riley was sweeping the walkway with a broom. Team two was carrying the bag of mulch to the landscaping fabric they were working so hard. Ronin found a bulb team two was doing good in spreading it team one was to. They were spreading the mulch by hands and rake.

Today at Service Learning we took bags of red mulch out of Ms. O’s car. Arwen and Cody carried bags into the courtyard, we put the rest on a cart. Then we counted how many bags, and there were ten bags of the red mulch. The other kids are raking in the middle of the circle of the courtyard. Riley, Ronin and Bryann are hanging up two bird houses. Cody and Bryann are pushing the wagon full of dirt.
Riley and Ronin are making bird feeders. Cody is making the last bird feeder. Sophia pulled out a big weed. It was huge! All of the kids are filling in the hole of the stumps. Alyssa is pulling the wagon. The bird houses are almost done. We found a bug on Ronin’s leg. Bryann swept up the dirt. Riley and Sophia are edging the circle now. Ronin and Alyssa are sweeping. Kids went in to record the Imovie.

Today in service learning we started working on the last bench. When we got outside Emily was helping knock down the flower boxes. After the boxes were knocked down everyone from the group carried a piece of wood and made a pile with it. Inside the group was working on fixing the stepping stones by gluing new stones. One group was working together by screwing and building the last bench. The other group was observing the different flowers and talking about making a butterfly garden. They were deciding what could be put in the butterfly garden. We put two painted birdhouses in the courtyard by the trees. We are excited to get to eat lunch outside on our new benches for the third day in a row. One of our groups got to see a hummingbird moth that landed on the butterfly bush. Carl got to come outside in the courtyard and help us with building the bench. We also ate lunch with Carl the cougar.

Today the younger kids are working on the second bench. The older kids are telling the teachers in the library what we are doing in the courtyard. They’re also laminating the names of the plants in the courtyard so we know what plants there are. The younger kids were measuring. They’re putting on the bench legs. The older kids are putting the names of the plants on a stick of wood. The seat is on the second bench, now it is finished. The younger kids are taping the names of the plants on the sticks. I got to put a name of a plant on one of the plants.

Today in our service learning project we made posters (we used wood planks so we could put them the courtyard). We also had new people drawing on paper! Currently we are making the tough decision on which to pick. One of the drawings we picked was mine! As I walk outside I notice a lot of saws and electric screw-drivers going (this is the on the picnic/bench tables). All of the kids are hard at work, luckily the sun has hid behind the clouds and a breeze is moving in! As I observe we are putting together the bottom top of the bench. A lot of work is going on! The part I am really exited about is eating lunch outside on the picnic tables!!!
